When looking at the shadows of these signs posts they almost look like inukshuks which is quite fitting because traditionally inukshuks were used as points of reference. 

This sign post forest originated in 1942 when a home sick US ARMY G.I erected a sign that pointed the way to his hometown. Over the years 75,000 signs have been posted by weary travellers on the Alaskan Highway.
